 The
Halifax Citadel is one of few historic fortifications in Nova Scotia
that showcases 18th century military lifestyle on a daily basis for
those interested in our rich history; however, even major fortifications
that boast daily demonstrations take on a more life like feeling when
reenactors set up an encampment. At this encampment in 2005 (shown
left) several soldiers from varying regiments conduct a firing
demonstration of their own after the regular forces for the
fortification have left the parade. Although the drill is very
similar, subtle differences can be seen in the movements and heard in
the orders called by the sergeant majors.In addition, to demonstrations many encampments are usually organized around a mock battle, which provides spectators with an opportunity to see how battle was actually conducted, a rare treat even at locations such as the Halifax Citadel, which houses its own garrison. |
 Perhaps
the most noticeable difference during an encampment is the presence of
tentage and the boisterous atmosphere, which accompanies placing several
hundred, sometimes several thousand, re-enactors with the walls of a
fortification. Pictured on the right is the tent and awning of an
officer. Note two officers are seated and are being assisted by
their wives while a private remains outside the awning; however, he is
shortly encouraged to join the officers for libations.
We currently have a limited gallery of the events at the site available and we hope to improve our own gallery of pictures for this event in the near future.
