Québec City 2004: British Advance: KOR at far rightThe King's Orange Rangers are based out of Liverpool Nova Scotia, but boast a membership that extends across the province.  The group is a non-profit organization composed of volunteers who share a desire to preserve and promote Canada's history, specifically from the period of the American Revolution.

We welcome all people interested in 18th century history and pursuing historical reenactment.  Although we encourage new members to take up the soldiers life, both men and women, to ensure we maintain our military origins as a Royal Provincial Regimental Company, Captain John Howard's Company, not all of our members portray soldiers.

Other roles within the group include pioneers, trades people, musicians, sutlers (merchants), and camp followers.  Camp followers include women and children who assist with various tasks at events.  In addition, our group has recently acquired a field mortar and is encouraging both new and current members to consider becoming members of our artillery crew.

We pursue our goal of preserving and promoting our history by participating in numerous events throughout the year; however, our focus is typically on historic encampments held as part of tourism events within Nova Scotia.  In addition, our group usually attends at least one out of province event per season (summer), such as the event at Québec City in 2004 pictured above.  Encampments usually include military exercises including  Reveille at Quebec Encampment 2004reveille (wake up call), drill practice, firing demonstrations, mock battles and camp life demonstrations such as cooking, sewing, games, dancing, singing, various musical instrument performances and of course camping! To learn more about some of the places the King's Orange Rangers have visited see our Events Gallery.

In addition, to encampments our group also participates in parades, meets to practice drill and celebrates important dates in our history such as King George the Third's Birthday, the arrival of the KOR in Liverpool and the successful, though comical, repelling of an American privateer raid on Liverpool.  To support the activities of the group throughout the year we also host an annual planked salmon supper at the beginning of June, serve "arrest warrants" at local accommodations during conferences and occasionally attend private or public functions on a commission basis as approved by the membership.  Our group also sells specially minted collectable coins featuring images related to our history.  In addition, to these fundraisers our group has benefited from the generosity of one our members, who is also Queens County's mayor, John Leefe, who divides the profits from the sale of his book "Atlantic Privateers" between the group and the Fort Point Lighthouse Park, located on the site of the former King's Orange Rangers garrison and blockhouse.

We do not require members to maintain a stated level of participation to remain in the group.  Although we     re-enact a military regiment recognize the other commitments of our members may make it difficult to attend events/activities.  As a group we usually commit to attending 4 to 5 encampments a season; however, some members attend additional events as individuals from the group (we often get invited to events, but can not commit as a group) and some members are only able to attend 1 or 2 events a year.  Re-enacting is a wonderful hobby, and in our group we encourage to participate when possible so you may share in the good times as we re-create our history.
